Guidelines for the 2007 School Funding Essay Contest
     ATTENTION:   STUDENTS IN GRADES 7-12, WE NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU!
Presenting:

The 2007
SCHOOL FUNDING ESSAY CONTEST

ESSAYS CAN BE SUBMITTED ON ONE
OF THE FOLLOWING TOPICS:

~ Dear Governor: Advice from an Ohio student on fixing school funding.
~ Why is education included in the Ohio Constitution and why was our funding system found unconstitutional?
~ How my school is affected by Ohio's school funding problem.

Essay submissions will be divided into two categories; 7-9th grades and 10-12th grades. Two essays from each category will be selected based on quality of the writing, relevance to the topic, and persuasiveness of the writing.

Essays should be 500-1000 words and must be submitted electronically. They can be submitted as MS Word attachments, or as text in the body of an e-mail to: essays@ohiofairschools.org

Each essay must include:
Name, Grade, School, Home Address, Home Phone, and email. (this can be a teacher 's email)

The contest is open to all Ohio public school students in grades 7-12.

In recognition of their outstanding work, the authors of the selected essays will receive a $150 cash scholarship and the opportunity to read their essay at a public statewide event.

Please print a few flyers and post them at your school. Or give them to english, social studies and journalism teachers who would be interested in doing this as a class assignment.

This is the 6th year that the Campaign has organized the contest, which helps raise awareness about how young people are affected by Ohio's school funding system. The purpose of this contest is to provide a way for student voices to be heard in the debate about school funding in Ohio. To read last year's winners click here.
The contest organizers reserve the right to publish essays in print and in electronic formats in order to share these voices with Ohio citizens and policymakers.
